Mini Project 3: A Trip to Cairo, Egypt

Good day everyone! :)

This week, we conducted an exciting activity which was successful AND fun, hence we would like to share it here. It's a 'flight trip' that was carried out with a group of 10-year-olds. Since they were learning about ancient Egypt, we thought of ending the unit with this memorable 'flight'.  

The activity flow is as follows:

Before the Flight: Prepare the Documents

Teachers need to prepare a few things beforehand such as the boarding passes, identification cards, passports, information chart for station games and feedback forms. All these are prepared to let the students have a feel of how it's like to travel via airplane, especially for those who have never flown before. 

A day before the flight, pupils are briefed on the basic regulations in a real flight. They also fill in their particulars on the passport cover following the details on the identification cards.

During the Flight: Station Games Activity

On the day itself, pupils need to show their identification cards in order to get their boarding passes. Once they enter the 'airplane',  they sit in the allocated groups and listen to the 'flight announcements'. Once the flight takes off, pupils start doing the activities in each station. At the end of the trip, pupils check their work and fill in the feedback form behind their passports before they exit the 'airplane'.

After the Flight: Sharing Session

Pupils recap their flight experience and share how they feel about it with their friends. They are guided to write a short paragraph about their experience and some are asked to share what they've written. After editing their paragraphs, pupils rewrite it on sticky notes and they paste it on the noticeboard.

What are the benefits? All four language skills are incorporated in this mini project as pupils need to: 

1) Listen to the instructions given by the flight attendant. 

2) Repeat the steps that they need to do during the flight. 

3) Read the information from each station and complete the activities.  

4) Write a paragraph about their flight experience.  

5) Present what they wrote to the class and on the sticky notes.

6) Do a gallery walk to read the sticky notes.

Text 53 - Holiday Memories

Hello everyone. Hope you are all doing fine :)

Apart from sharing fun mini-projects, we would like to start another series of comprehension texts sharing, but this time we will be using poems as the texts. :)

For each poem, we will also share listening, speaking, reading, writing and language arts activities with the answer keys. (** To get the Answers, scroll to the bottom of the post for the download link. **) 

Also, we will share DIFFERENTIATED activities for each skill to help the lower proficiency learners achieve the same goal as the rest. (These differentiated activities are titled 'LEVEL UP!')

Mini-Project 2: Housework Bar Chart

Hello everyone! :)

This week, we would like to share a project that was carried out with a group of 24 10-year-olds. Since we were learning about schedules and examples of house chores, we thought of ending the unit with this fun activity.  

There are six steps to complete the project:

Step 1: Question and Answer (Q&A) Session

Pupils from one group will interview pupils from another group about what chore do they help out at home. They record the answers in the table below:

Step 2: Data Collection

Leaders from each group will collect, combine and record group member's data in the table below:

Step 3: Transferring Data to Bar Chart

Each group is given an A3 paper. They transfer the data into a bar chart. (See Sample below:)

Step 4: Describe the Bar Chart

Pupils write simple sentences based on the bar chart. For example:

i) These are the data from Group 2. 

ii) All pupils do the washing at home. 

iii) Only one pupil does not make the bed.

iv) Three pupils help to take out the rubbish at home.

(The number of sentences depends on the teacher and pupils' proficiency levels.)

Step 5: Group Presentation

Each group presents their bar chart and describes it in front of the class.

Step 6: Gallery Walk

All bar charts are pasted on the whiteboard. Each pupil is given two reaction stickers (Facebook like and heart reactions). They decide which bar chart they would like to react to. The bar chart with the highest number of reaction wins and the group members are given rewards.

 

What are the benefits? All language skills are incorporated in this mini project (even language arts!) and it even goes across the curriculum. Pupils need to: 

1) Ask and answer questions during the interview. 

2) Record all the data correctly. 

3) Transfer data into a bar chart. (This incorporates mathematical skills) 

4) Analyse and differentiate data using colours/patterns. (This incorporates Art skills) 

5) Write sentences to describe their findings.

6) Present in front of the class.

7) Do a gallery walk and paste reaction.

This week, we would like to share Scrapbook Materials for Units 0 and 1 from English Academy Stars CEFR Textbook, meant for ages 11 and above. Pictures are taken from Google. We just put them together in this way to help pupils reinforce the vocabulary learnt in these units :)

Fun Mini-Project 1: Profile Chain Activity

Hello everybody! Hope you're all doing fine.

This year, we would like to share a series of fun MINI-PROJECTS which can be carried out in the classroom, so don't miss out on trying them with your pupils.

Mini-Project 1: Profile Chain Activity 

(Suitable for ANY grade / level)

This project allows pupils to talk about themselves in a unique way. They are given a paper to draw any object they like. On the object itself, pupils divide it into sections for them to write details such as their names, likes / dislikes, hobbies, ambition and something their friends should know about them. An example is shown below, which we modify from the original hoodie picture (Credit goes to Twinkl.com for the original idea.)

What are the benefits? All language skills are incorporated in this mini project (even language arts!). Pupils need to: 

1) Read and understand the labels. 

2) Write the answers with correct spelling. 

3) Talk about themselves with a friend. 

4) While each pupil shares their profile with the class, the others listen and fill in the table with correct information. 

5) Language arts is seen in their creativity of colouring their profile.

Hello, everyone! 

In our first post of the year 2023, we are excited to share FOUR new products:

The YEAR 5 Workbook series is suitable to be used alongside the English Plus 1 CEFR Student Book (suitable for 11 years old onwards). Just like the Year 4 workbook set, we have created and assembled together activities to help learners improve on their listening, speaking, reading, writing and language arts skills in fun and interesting ways. 

We have prepared the student's workbook as well as the teacher's copy (which includes instructions on how to carry out the listening and speaking activities AND sample answers for all the activities). The activities cover all the Year 4 and 5 DSKP learning standards (it is stated in the teacher's copy), so this gives learners more practice in the language skills. 

This time around, we also have the LEVEL UP! version. The content is similar to the original Student Workbook, but with differentiated tasks to help the less proficient learners reach the same objective as the rest in the class.
