Hello everyone! :)
Here's another fun and exciting activity which was carried out with a group of 24 10-year-olds. Since they were learning about festivals and celebrations, we thought of getting them to learn and appreciate other types of celebrations done in other parts of the world.
The activity flow is as follows:
Step 1: Understanding Text
Teachers need to prepare a few things beforehand such as the information of each unique celebration from 10 other countries, summary table and pictures.
After assigning the pupils into groups of three, they chose the country at random (Wheel of Names website was used: https://wheelofnames.com/). They were given the celebration text to read. Based on the text, pupils need to complete the summary table with accurate information such as the name of celebration, period of celebration, significance etc. They also write simple sentences which will be useful for their poster presentation during the Showcase.
Step 2: Poster Creation
Each group is given a set of pictures which they need to arrange and label on the display sheet for their posters. They need to match the information to the correct pictures. How they arrange the pictures and decorate their posters are entirely up to their creativity.
Step 3: Showcase Time
When they've finished the poster, they prepare for the presentation. On Showcase Day, they present the celebration to a specially invited VIP as he/she walks and visits each poster. They talk about the significance of the celebration and the special food consumed during the festival. They also need to be ready to answer any impromptu questions from the VIP.
Step 4: Gallery Walk
Pupils are given a record sheet for them to write information as they 'visit' each poster. Once they've finished, they can check the answers and discuss with one another what they found most interesting in each celebration.
